Are you Elijah? · Three Gospel testimonies

John 1:19–23; Luke 1:17; Matthew 11:14

John 1:19And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

John 1:20And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

John 1:21And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

John 1:22Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

John 1:23He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

Luke 1:17And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Matt 11:14And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.

Reading notes

John answers a question about himself in the negative; Luke speaks of Elijah’s spirit and power; in Matthew, Jesus connects John with the expected Elijah. The speakers, circumstances and formulations differ.

These passages allow different interpretations of the relationship between John and Elijah. The quotations themselves do not equate a name, a person and the fulfilment of a role.
