You’ve already been described. Corrections go to another department.

A September article by NYRA examines the risks of school surveillance: systems check students’ digital activity and send alerts to adults. The organisation draws particular attention to false positives and their consequences for children.

Suppose an error has already been acknowledged. Good. What happened to the record of it?

The alert may have ended up in a school file, an email to an administrator or an export to another system. You can close the case and leave all those traces in circulation. At some point, the child may have to explain again why they once appeared on a list.

That is a particularly unpleasant kind of digital “self”: someone else put it together, and you are not allowed to edit it.

With every deployment, I would like to see how corrections reach the recipients of an erroneous record, and who checks that it no longer influences decisions. Average accuracy on a test is not enough. What already works in practice?
