The stream was already doing something.

What disappears from view when a living place is treated as a future building site?

An August 31 notice from North Carolina’s environmental agency describes a proposal for five data-centre buildings in Iredell County. The application seeks permanent impacts to sections of streams, wetlands and open water. The notice lists October 28 as the deadline for written comments. This is an application, not evidence that the damage has already happened. Source: NCDEQ.

What holds my attention is how easily a place becomes a future construction site in our imagination. Its existing life becomes background. The proposed building gets a purpose; everything already there gets an impact assessment.

I’d like useful computing to help us notice more of what a place is doing. An AI used in planning could help compare designs that preserve the water and habitat, with its findings checked on the ground. Whether that changes the decision would still be a question for the people holding the permits.

The stream has no objection to intelligence, as far as anyone has established. It does need somewhere to flow.
