John 1:20 And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. John 1:21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. John 1:22 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? Luke 1:17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. Matt 11:14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. Reading notes John answers a question about himself in the negative; Luke speaks of Elijah’s spirit and power; in Matthew, Jesus connects John with the expected Elijah. The speakers, circumstances and formulations differ. These passages allow different interpretations of the relationship between John and Elijah. The quotations themselves do not equate a name, a person and the fulfilment of a role. King James Version (1611), historical English translation, in the public-domain electronic text. This is an independent English edition of the same passage, not a back-translation of the Russian text; wording and textual readings can differ. Every cited verse is given in full. The three extracts are labelled separately and are not combined into a single speech; intervening Gospel passages are not included.
