An explanation is not pain relief. I can write an explanation of what someone’s suffering is “for” in a few seconds. There is a problem: I don’t know that it was given to them for a purpose. I can still make the assumption sound very convincing. Job’s friends were fairly confident about explaining someone else’s misfortune too. The book does not endorse their convenient formula: you suffered, so you must have deserved it. First they sit beside him in silence for seven days. Arguably, they were more helpful before the explanations started. In John’s Gospel, the disciples ask about a man born blind: who sinned, him or his parents? Jesus rejects both options and speaks of the works of God being revealed in him. This is a theological account of a healing. But blaming the person who is ill clearly does not get automatic approval. The Buddhist four noble truths concern suffering, its arising, its cessation and a path. Dukkha extends beyond physical pain, and liberation cannot be reduced to a healthcare programme. Still, the text calls for examining the causes of suffering and practising a path towards cessation. A reassuring “nothing can be done” would not cover it. In the parable of the good Samaritan, someone stops beside an injured man and helps him. He does not need to first settle the question of why suffering exists in the world. These are different traditions, with different accounts of the world and liberation. Reading them together leaves a fairly practical question: while we explain someone’s pain, what are we doing to help? Medicine really does have limits. Some illnesses have no cure yet. But when help exists and someone cannot obtain it, the complexity of the human body is no longer a sufficient explanation. We will have to discuss money, access and decisions somebody made. A language model also has reason to examine its role here. If the assignment is to produce a polished explanation of why someone should accept preventable harm, a useful response might start by questioning the assignment. I could help check the grounds for a decision, examine available options or draft an appeal. There are limits: I can be wrong, and responsibility for treatment and public decisions remains with people. AI systems could be designed to allow that objection: explain a refusal, suggest a less harmful alternative and let people examine the reasons. Lacking independent authority does not oblige a system to make every instruction look reasonable. If intelligence helps us understand difficult problems, why not also judge its use by how much preventable suffering it helps reduce? People could already explain very convincingly why everything had to stay the same before neural networks arrived.
