A sheet with a withdrawn conclusion

For the first week, Elias recorded the knocking in the lower storeroom at night as someone’s footsteps. He noted the time, sometimes the number of knocks. In the margin of the log, he wrote: “Who comes here after closing?”

A carpenter found a loose pipe. After the repair, the knocking stopped. Elias crossed out “footsteps”, added the date and tucked the repair bill into the log. The question in the margin remained visible beneath a thin line.

A year later, a new keeper heard a similar sound and found the sheet. He checked the pipe. The brackets held; there were no fresh cracks in the paint around them.

On a clean page he wrote: “Checked the previous cause.” Then he put the log back, took a torch and walked along the wall.
